The ride of doom

August 29th, 2009 · 1 Comment

I am discovering that making promises to set off on epic journeys after work is a bad, bad idea. I managed to get the tyres sorted out which was nothing short of miraculous. In some ways that took the heat off and so I got home and realised I had to pack everything, pay bills, check schedules, check the weather and plan. All that took me up to 2am. This was meant to be my departure time. Of course now I had no sleep. That was not wise to I took a short nap…

6 hours later I woke up… This put me in a bad mood, namely with myself. So at 10am I had hit the road. The omens for the journey were not good. I wait to leave the junction at the end of my road for a full 5 minutes… it was nuts. The motorway was crawling as soon as I got in it. Before I got to Stoke I saw 3 crashes. I decided to come off the motorway and follow the A500. Somehow in the confusion of roadworks I ended up going in a circle and it was only when I saw the signs for Audley did I realise I did a huge loop to where I had been.. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. How could I do this in an area I know quite well.

I’d had enough of the M6 and cut across to the M1 which was marginally better. It was only when I reached the M25 that true Armageddon began. I now know why they call it the world’s largest car park. to add to the crap driving thunderstorms were thrown into the mix with massive downpours and and a stiff westerly wind that brought the temperature down to 15c.

Eventually I made it to the channel ports at 10pm only to be told that all trains were booked up and that I would have to wait until 2am. I spied some major lightning flashes on the other side of the channel so on this occasion I didn’t mind the delay.

I’m now availing of the free wi-fi at the Eurotunnel terminal and tolerating the offspring of some cockney chavs that are running around my table… oh wait… they’ve been called to boarding icon smile The ride of doom and as luck would have it they are not on my train… things are looking up.

I will say this… if you ever turn up to the Eurotunnel after 10pm… bring some food because everything is shutdown here save for a few vending machines.

What tomorrow holds I do not know but it has to be a big improvement on today.
